The Summer Bite Is On: Your Best Days Offshore Start in Stuart

Mahi, kingfish, snapper & sailfish off the St. Lucie Inlet — aboard the 36ʹ Contender with Capt. Chris Britton

There’s a reason anglers from all over the country point their trucks toward Stuart and Jensen Beach when the water warms up. Sitting right on the edge of the Gulf Stream, the waters off the St. Lucie Inlet turn into some of the most productive fishing grounds on Florida’s east coast. The bite is wide open — from screaming kingfish runs to acrobatic mahi to a bottom full of snapper — and there’s no better way to get in on it than from the deck of our 36ʹ Contender.

Whether this is your first time wetting a line or you’ve got salt in your blood, here’s what’s firing offshore right now and how to make the most of it.

What’s Biting Offshore Right Now

Mahi-Mahi (Dolphin) Few fish put on a show like a mahi lit up next to the boat. Right now there are plenty of schoolies around to keep the rods bent, and the occasional gaffer or big bull cruising the weed lines and current edges. We run and gun — hunting frigate birds, floating debris, and color changes — to put you on them. Pound for pound, they’re one of the most fun (and best-eating) fish in the ocean.

Kingfish The smoker kings are stacked up on the reefs in the 60- to 90-foot range, both north and south of the inlet — the Six Mile reef and down toward the Loran Tower have been holding fish. When a king crashes a bait and peels off 100 yards of line in seconds, you’ll understand why they’re a Treasure Coast favorite.

Mangrove & Mutton Snapper If you love bending a rod and filling a cooler with dinner, the bottom bite is heating up. Mangrove snapper are chewing on structure in the 80- to 110-foot range — live pilchards are the ticket — and the mutton snapper bite keeps getting better. This is some of the best table fare you can pull out of the Atlantic.

Sailfish, Blackfin Tuna & Wahoo The surface bite has been loaded with variety. We’re seeing sailfish releases, hard-fighting blackfin tuna, and the odd wahoo screaming line off the reel. You never quite know what’s going to eat next — and that’s exactly what makes a day offshore out of Stuart so addictive.

Tight lines and blue water — book your trip aboard our 36ʹ Contender.
